Practical 9

Using Internet as a Research Tool has been my CDS for this semester. At first, I thought that this CDS will be very difficult as I would need to handle blogs. However, after going through the first lesson, I was quite relieved that the lesson went quite well.


This would be the last lesson for UIR. For the whole journey of UIR, I have learnt a lot of things. I got to know the different search facilities that are avaialable and how I can do my research and get relevant results fast and easy with the use of booleans. Also, i learnt how to evaluate my resources to choose for the best results.


UIR has given me a bigger space on how I can do my research. It has enable me to choose the best search facility for my research. I really hope in future, i would be using what i have learnt.

Practical 8

For class test 2, i would say that i did not do my very best. Obviously, i failed. I realised that even it was a small class test, it still requires a lot of understanding and more reading of the lecture notes. This is because although it seems simple, it still needs a very deep understanding of the topics.


Unfortunately, this is the last practical in UIR. I would say that i have learnt a lot of things in this module such as the research facilities available, how to analyse and the citation skills too. I believe it will be useful for me in future when I do my research for my assignments or my work in future.

Practical 7

Nowadays, there are a lot of discussion forum available now. UIR WIKI is a website that enables users to discuss certain topics together. With this WIKI, I can post comments and also reply to my classmates comments on a certain topic that my group members has posted.


Without us noticing, it acts as a learning process for all of us. Personally, i feel that this WIKI is a good form of interacting with classmates and sharing ideas together.

This entry will be the second internet resource that I used for my assignment 2.

It is a forum discussing on the impact of budget airlines on asian tourism. The website displays users or consumers opinions and ideas on the presence of budget airlines. The contents are very detailed and clear for other users to read through.

For the website above, it has the relevant information that I am looking for in my research. It shows the factor on how the airlines are competing for the travel traffic. The article is very comprehensive. This is because it mentioned briefly the impact that the airlines have caused. In the subsequent paragraph, elaboration on the impacts is made. Thus, enhancing the coverage with the relevant information. Overall, the content of the website is good. However, the arrangement and format of the website are very dull.

Practical 4 and 5

Firstly, my first assignment topic is 'Discuss the impact of terrorism on world economy.' In this particular practical, i need to search through three different search facilities to compare and evaluate on the search effectiveness of the search engines.


The three search facilities that I have used are GOOGLE (search engine), Ixquick(Meta search engine) and Yahoo! Directory (Subject Directory). I have typed in the same keywords for all searcj facilities; 'terrorism impact on world economy.'


For the search engine, the hit size was very large and google displayed a wide range of impacts that terrorism has caused. In other words, i could say that this search engine was very efficient in displaying large sume of results in a short perioid of time. Most of the results are relevant to what I am finding and the format and arrangements are all very clear.


Moving on to the meta search engine, its search results are very accurate and easily comprehend. One special feature about this meta search engine is that it will display a star near the results if any search engine chooses it as one of the ten best results. Similar to search engine, this meta search engine also return large size of results that are relevant to my keywords.


Last but not least, the subject directory. For this subject directory, I think that the hit size is not as big as the other search facilities and some of the results are irrelevant.


The similiarities between these three search facilities are that they search through results from the keywords I have entered. The differences are the seach capabilities as in the relevancy of the results and also the hit size.


I think that Google is the most excellent among all the three search facilities. This is because, unlike yahoo! directory that return quite irrelevant results, Google return very relevant results. In addition, google also rank their results according to relevancy. The hit size is also very big compared to the rest.


All in all, this activity has helped me have a better view of the different search facilities available. With thie activity also, I found out the most efficient search facility that can be used for all my researches.

Reasons:

It is an analysis made by International Monetary Fund. The analysis is on the different effects of terrorism on the world economy. In other words, it displays the negative and positive impacts of terrorism on the economy.

Reasons :

For this website, I think it is a mixture of news and information. The reason why I said so is because this website has a few news on the latest terrorism activities and in the latter part, it moves on to the information of economic consequences of terrorism.

Reasons :

At first look, this website may seem like an advocacy but after further reading, I realize that this website is more to personal type. Firstly, this website might be a forum page and contains a lot of people’s comments and opinions on terrorism. However, this is not advocacy and the writers or authors have no intention of influencing anyone. They are just voicing out their comments.

Reasons :

This page is news that was published from a media website. It examines the impact that terrorism has caused till today. This news made me realize how big terrorism has been in our life today.

Practical 2; Introduction to Internet Resources: Categories of Internet Resources 2

For practical 2, I was given a task to research on the topic which I have chosen; impact of terrorism on the world economy. To search for the results, I have chose two search engines namely YAHOO! and GOOGLE.

The keywords that I used while searching are impact of terrorism and also terrorism on world economy. Other than that, I was also tasked to categorise my search results into three types; Organisation, Subject-Based and Personal.

• ORGANISATION

  It displays International Monetary Fund's (IMF) analysis on the different effects of terrorism on the world economy. I would say that this is a very good analysis of IMF as all the possible impacts are clear and concise.
  
  
  On the other hand, the second website discusses the economic conequences on terrorism. I do think this document is reliable looking at how the analysis is being done.
  
  
• PERSONAL
  This is a forum site which discusses on terrorism itself. I did look through a few pages of the site and found out that there are a lot of comments from individuals regarding terrorism. This site is somehow good as it features people's opinions on a certain topic which in this case is, terrorism.
  
  
• SUBJECT-BASED
  As for this subject based result, it is a news taken from a media website where the impact of terrorism was being examined. This goes to show how much terrorism is already a big part of the world and also economy.
  
  
  Overall, i think that all the results that I have found are reliable. However, the most reliable and useful is the organisation as thorough analysis was being made before producing such comments, opinions and facts.

I am just 1 month away from my 18th birthday and i am super excited about it.

I have a few interest which ranges from sports and all they way to doing productions. Although i love sports, i do not really practice much as most of my time is spent in school and with my production team.

Speaking of production, i have a small production team which my cousins and I created about a year ago. We love doing the behind-the-scenes kind of thing. In addition, we also do party planning for anyone.
